What is your relationship with setting goals?
Do you love ‘em or hate ‘em?
Many love them because it’s a means of focusing, moving ahead, and achieving them feels better than Christmas to a 5 year old.
For others, it goes into the pile of unobtainable’s…Bummer!
So what will help us obtain our goals?
First, I believe that if we have a pattern of failure in obtaining our goals we need to listen and learn from that experience. For many, it could be something we experienced as a child. An event that made us feel unloved, unworthy, undeserving, and so on. Well, I’m going to get in your face a little and tell you… those things happened a long time ago from people outside of you. Its not your fault they were insensitive, mean or what have you…it was them and “their” issue, not yours! So, if you’re still holding onto old limiting beliefs, I’m here to tell you…it’s ok to let them go and get on with having the most satisfying life you can experience.
11 Tips on Making Goals Work for You:
1. Narrow your focus. Start with smaller goals if you’ve been unsuccessful. If you began with a goal and failed, it was probably because it was too big and too fast for you at the time. Put yourself in the position of obtaining small victories and build up from there. On the other hand, if you’re a person who does make things happen, go for larger goals.
2. Really imagine that you’ve ALREADY obtained your goal. Yup, close your eyes and envision yourself already having it, what it would feel like, how it would change your life, how your life would be different. Write down how having this in your life will make your life better, and then put this list someplace where you’ll see it many times a day.
3. Be specific! If you want it to happen within one year say so, put it out there. If it’s a dollar amount, state the exact dollar amount and the date by which you want it obtained. If you want to loose weight, STOP buying and eating/drinking diet and low calorie processed foods! If it’s weight loss you’re trying to obtain, read this and you’ll have a greater understanding of why you haven’t been able to shed those excess pounds. Stop drinking fluoridated water and using products that contain fluoride.
4. Be grateful for what you have now! Every day take a few minutes and write down all the things you are grateful for that day. Or better yet, at the dinner table with your family take turns listing the things you’re grateful for that day.
5. Find a partner. Someone who is working towards the same goal or someone who is working on making changes too. Be “supportive” and hold each other “accountable” for doing things that make your goal happen.
6. Take Action! Do things that will “make” your goal happen. Changes don’t drop out of the sky while we’re sitting on the couch watching TV and drinking a beer. You have to get up and do things that are in alignment with that which you want.
7. Be your goal. If you want more respect, treat yourself in a respectful way. If you want a raise at your job, do things that are deserving of more money. If you want your children to listen to you, treat them like people who will listen to you.
8. Pat yourself on the back. I don’t mean that in a conceded way. But when your efforts are in alignment with the path to obtaining your goals it’s perfectly fine to allow yourself to acknowledge that “you’ve done good!”
9. Read something significant. Something that will give you motivation, new ideas, better skills to manage your life and finances. If you’re short on ideas as to what to read just take a look at the books I have in the right column of this blog, these are terrific books. I have them, I’ve read them - they are fantastic! Leaders Are Readers.
10. Stop the negative self talk and thinking. If you’re in debt, stop thinking about how you’re going to get out of it. Set up a debt repayment program that will take care of it so that you can focus on where you’re going. 11. Eat well, exercise and get plenty of good rest. Will all the pitching and manipulation from companies in todays world on diet and food it’s challenging to know what’s right and what’s going on with our food.
