Diffusing

Natural Air Purification

With aromatherapy becoming more and more popular there are many models and types of diffusers available on the market.

How do you know which one is best and which is right for you?

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons

Light Bulb Diffusers

Ceramic Ring Diffuser

This is a metal or ceramic ring that sits atop your light bulb. A drop of oil is placed on this ring and the heat of the bulb, warms the ring and the heat is said to disperse the oil into the air. The problem with this method is three fold.

?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ Heat destroys the therapeutic properties of a true essential oil.

?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ Only small amounts of an essential oil can be used as most essential oils are flammable, making this method unsafe.

?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ Not very practical - the light needs to be on for any diffusion to take place.

Fan Diffusers

Fan Diffuser

This method uses a cloth pad with several drops of oil added to the pad, which are placed in front of a cold stream of air. While the oil is not damaged by heat, little to no essential oil actually gets into the air (only the “scent” is getting into the air) and certainly not enough to provide much in the way of a therapeutic benefit.

Water Diffusers
In this method, a “well” filled with water, to which drops of essential oil are added. The water is then shaken or vibrated to disperse essential oil vapor into the air. Little more than general evaporation takes place providing a mild fresh scent to the air, like the fan diffuser, only minor therapeutic benefits are achieved.

Nebulizer Diffusers
This is by far the best method of dispersing essential oil vapor into the air for therapeutic effects. These models offer several options and vary in price from $40 to $250. A nebulizing diffuser consists of an air pump (like you have for a fish tank) that blows cold air through a tube and into a hand blown glass nebulizer which puts micro-fine particles of the essential oil into the air.

It is the dispersing of micro-fine particles that are responsible for killing bacteria, fungus, mold and other airborne micro-organisms in our homes and offices. A quality nebulizing diffuser can cover hundreds of square feet in just seconds. Since the micro-fine mist particles are so small, they remain suspended in the air for several hours. Essential oils dispersed via nebulizing diffuses have also been found to reduce the amount of airborne chemicals in the air.

When selecting a nebulizer diffuser, consider the following

Most models have the nebulizer and oil well as one unit. Meaning the glass has a compartment that holds the oil, a small glass rod that puts the oil in front of the air flow and sends it out the top of the nebulizer.
The main problem with this type of diffuser is clogging, since the oil never completely leaves the nebulizer, this results in clogging of the small glass parts and is not easily cleaned with any natural solvent. Once clogged, they are worthless. The replacement cost of the glass nebulizer is often more than half the price of the entire unit, replacing the nebulizer every 4 to 6 months can become rather costly.

The Young Living Designed Diffuser

YL Diffuser

Young Living has designed a diffuser with the nebulizer and essential oil well as separate pieces. In this model, the nebulizer will almost never become clogged, when the unit is turned off the oil returns to the separate well.

This design also allows for a bottle of essential oil to be placed upside down in the well for continuous use. A 15 ml bottle of oil will take over 48 hours of continuous use to empty. This equates to 48 days of diffusing at 20 minutes, three times per day.

Yes, you can put your diffuser on a light timer, have it turn itself on for 15 minutes and off for a couple hours and then back on/off again, any time of the day or night you like. Imagine walking in the door of your office or home and having that wonderful fresh scent and know that pathogenic germs are a thing of the past! Or, dispersed throughout the night, while sleeping, to help ease the discomforts of colds and flu.

It Gets Even Better!
Young Living believes strongly that every new Distributor should start experiencing the benefits of a diffuser in the basic Start Living Kit. This basic kit is included in all of the 5 Distributor Kit options.

Here’s the great part - in the basic US and Canadian Start Living Kit is a coupon worth $50.

It’s a 50% off coupon towards a Young Living cold-air nebulizer diffuser.

Benefits of Proper Diffusing

?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ Essential oils kill pathogenic micro-organisms of all kinds.

?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ World renowned medical researcher, Dr. Jean Valnet M.D., states that essential oils provide remarkable protection against viral infections ranging from shingles to influenza.

?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ Private research, funded by Young Living Essential Oils. Inc. at Weber State University, successfully demonstrated specific essential oils diffused in a closed chamber killed every virus tested within minutes. Of 74 single oils tested, lemongrass, Roman chamomile, cinnamon, rose, valerian and yarrow scored the highest kill rates.

?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ Specific Young Living blends of essential oils, like the Thieves blend demonstrated a 99.6% kill rate against airborne bacteria and scored high for its antiviral qualities and anti-fungal qualities.

?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ Find someone who regularly diffuses essential oils in their home and ask them how many colds they have had lately. For families with children, diffusing is a God-send. It translates directly into fewer sickness, fewer doctor visits, and fewer medical bills. Even when a cold is felt coming on (caught from infection outside the home), its duration is quickly curtailed.

Diffusing essential oils in the home or work place is one of the best ways to purify our environment. The anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and antiseptic properties of the oils, along with the negative ions and oxygenating molecules that are released when essential oils are diffused, all help to reduce chemicals, bacteria, and metallics in the air.

Cinnamon bark oil, oregano oil, and Thieves (a blend by Young Living Essential Oils) were all tested by Weber State University, and were shown to kill 100% of the airborne bacteria present when diffused into the atmosphere. (KID-Radio with Lance Richardson and Dr. Gary Young, ND, March 5, 1996).

Diffuser Usage Details

Home Use: The diffuser may be used for any length of time desired from 5 minutes per hour or on a continuous basis for 2 to 3 hours. However, short periods of time, such as 5 to 15 minutes per hour are recommended for those just beginning to use the oils.

Large Commercial Areas: Turn your diffuser on for 15 to 30 minutes every 2 hours until everyone in the area becomes acquainted with the oils. It may also be left running continuously.

Changing Oils: Diffusing a variety of Young Living Oil Blends is an enjoyable way to discover your favorite ones. When changing from one single oil or blend to another, simply let all the oil in the well be diffused. Then add a little of the next oil, let it diffuse until empty and then add the amount you want. If there is too much oil left to diffuse, use an eyedropper to remove the excess from the well and put it back into the bottle.

Mixing Oils: Do not mix the blends as you may change the desired results. However, a single oil may be added to a blend or two single oils may be mixed together and diffused.

V-6 Mixing & Massage Oils: DO NOT diffuse these products as they are too heavy and thick and will clog the diffuser. (Example: Ortho Ease, Sensation, Relaxation, Cel-Lite Magic, Dragon Time or any other vegetable-based product.)

Oil Viscosity
Different oils have different viscosity or thickness and therefore diffuse at different speeds.

Young Living blends such as Valor, Joy, Harmony, Endo Flex, Awaken, 3 Wise Men and Single oils such as Sandalwood, Myrrh, Patchouli, etc., have a much thicker viscosity and therefore diffuse more slowly and create more noise in the diffuser.

For example, to diffuse one bottle of Valor could take up to 48 hours or longer with the pump running continuously on high, which is unnecessary and wastes a lot of oil.

Thinner Young Living blends such as Citrus Fresh, Peace and Calming, R.C., Purification, Abundance, ImmuPower, and single oils such as Lavender, Orange, and Lemon are thinner oils and diffuse very quickly.

For example, a bottle of Citrus Fresh will diffuse within eight hours. A bottle of thicker oil can be left upside down in the well as it will diffuse slowly. However, with thinner oils, it would be better to put the desired amount of oil into the well so as not to use the entire bottle.

NOTE: Never add water to the oils or thin them with another substance as this will clog the jets and perhaps nullify the desired results.

You don’t settle for second best when it comes to your essential oils, so don’t settle for anything less than the best when it comes to your diffuser either.
